overlooked GARDEN
ss9
Having lost their privacy and after several surrounding properties removed trees, this family desperately needed to replace screening and regain a sense of enclosure in their garden.
Client comments:
‘I can’t thank you enough for the lovely garden design! You listened to our requirements and provided something so different to other designs. It is beautiful and interesting and my lovely little haven. Thank you.’
The back of the house was higher than the garden, so the view from the inside was significantly different to the view from lower down in the garden. The challenge therefore was to provide screening from both aspects, but without loss of light.
The client had a set budget, of which a large portion was required to remove the existing patio and install a new one. This was before anything else could be considered. The garden design was split into two sections for easier budget allocation and workflow.
Within the design Stipa Tenuissima 'Pony Tails' was used repeatedly to create unity within the two spaces, also adding texture and movement and complementing the coastal location. The Photinia x fraseri standard trees and Betula utilis were staggered to create uniform screening from all areas. Small Aronia x prunifolia 'Brilliant' trees were added for height and seasonal interest. Agapanthus 'White' and Allium 'Purple Sensation' were thoughtfully dotted throughout. Evergreen Pittosporum tobira 'Nanum' were strategically placed to create interesting shapes that complement the client's existing Buxus balls and provide year round colour. Perovskia 'Little Spire' were grouped for splashes of colour in keeping with the sustainable aspect of the planting.
